I’ve been using some no-name Amazon hiking poles for a while, and while they do the job, I’m not a fan of the locking mechanism—it’s a bit finicky. Just got back from a trip where I used some Leki poles that the outfitter provided. Those felt way better, especially with how they collapse and lock in place. But now I’m looking to buy my own, and I’m seeing prices ranging from $30 at Dick’s to over $100 at REI. I don’t need anything fancy like shock absorption, so how do I pick the right ones?
I started with some bargain poles from Walmart, and they were okay until I tried out a friend’s Black Diamond poles on a hike. The difference was night and day. I think the locking mechanism is key—I’d say it’s worth spending a bit more for something that feels solid and reliable. Here’s what they look like…
I’d actually recommend Leki because they just work for me, but I’ve heard good things about Cascade Mountain Tech if you’re looking to save a few bucks. It’s really about comfort and what fits your budget.
If you’re not into shock absorption, I’d say go for something lightweight and sturdy. Like @AlpineAdventurer, I use Black Diamond poles too, and I love the flick lock system they have—super secure. But honestly, you can’t go wrong with Leki either. Check out some online reviews; they might help you narrow it down.

I’ve also actually tried Leki and Black Diamond, and both were great, but I ended up going with Leki just because they felt better in my hands.
I was also once set to buy some expensive poles, but I ended up with a mid-range pair of REI Co-op brand poles. They’ve held up really well, and the locking mechanism is solid.
I think you should consider how easy it is to adjust them on the fly. I’ve used poles where the locking mechanism was a pain to adjust mid-hike, and it was frustrating. That’s why I ended up with a pair of Leki Makalu poles. They’re not cheap, but the locking system is rock solid.
Don’t sleep on Black Diamond either. Leki poles are also comfortable, go with them, your choice mate…
