I’m kinda new to longer hikes and planning to try some multi-day trips soon. When should I start using walking sticks, and what’s a good basic pair for someone just starting out? Also, is there any trick to adjusting them right, or is it just grab and go? Sorry if this sounds dumb, just curious what folks here suggest.
Hey, not a dumb question at all. I personally started using poles on day hikes over 10 miles and immediately noticed they saved my knees, especially downhill. For beginners, I’d say go for adjustable aluminum poles, like Black Diamond or REI Co-op.
I wouldn’t stress too much about ‘needing’ them. I didn’t start using poles until I was deep into backpacking and honestly only use them when carrying heavy loads.
Try going without for now and see how your body feels. If you feel pressure in your knees or back, then maybe invest.
Oh, so it’s more of a personal thing? Cool. I’ll probably try without first like you said. Just curious, do poles actually make uphill easier or is that a myth?
They totally help on inclines. You’re distributing some of the work to your arms instead of just your legs. You’ll notice less fatigue when using poles on steep uphill stretches.
One thing I wish someone told me: make sure the handles are comfy. I learned the hard way. Cork handles are a lot better for sweaty hands vs. foam or plastic. Just something to keep in mind when shopping for walking sticks.
I think it depends on what works for you, but yeah, poles do make a difference going uphill. They take some pressure off your legs by letting your arms pitch in like someone said before.
