What’s the best hybrid shoe for hiking and city walking?

Hi everyone! I’m planning a backpacking trip to South America this January for a few weeks. It’ll be my second big trip (my first was backpacking in Europe for a few weeks).

I’m trying to pack light and avoid bringing two pairs of shoes. My feet are size 12 (men’s), so my shoes take up a lot of space. I’ll be doing a mix of heavy city walking and hiking (nothing too extreme, but on various terrains). I’m looking for a shoe I can comfortably wear every day for the whole trip, whether it’s exploring cities or hitting hiking trails.

Comfort and performance are the top priorities, but if they can match any outfit, that’s a great bonus! Any suggestions on brands or types of shoes would be super helpful. Thanks!

Saucony trail runners are great for both hiking and walking.

I’ve seen a lot of praise for the Danner Mountain 600. They seem like a good mix for hiking and urban walking.

I’d recommend the Merrell Moab Speed. Great for mixed terrains!

I use Oboz Sypes, and they’ve worked well for both hiking and city walking. Mine are water-resistant, but I’m not sure if that’s what you’d need for January in the southern hemisphere.

Best advice is to go to an outdoor store and try a few options. Everyone’s feet and style are different, so finding the right fit is key.

I’m all about wide toe box shoes now. Topos are my go-to—they’re super comfortable and versatile.

I loved the Scarpa Zen Pro. They’ve been my best hiking shoes, and I’ve also used them to walk 12 miles a day in Vegas—they held up perfectly. They’re pretty stiff, but you get used to it, and other shoes end up feeling flimsy in comparison.

Scarpa doesn’t make the Zen Pro anymore, but any of their approach shoes should be solid.
