Hello! I’m planning a winter hiking trip in Umpqua, OR this February with friends. I’ve secured a 0° sleeping bag with duck feather filling and now I’m looking to upgrade my backpack. My current one is an old military pack from an army surplus store, bought almost 15 years ago. It’s served its purpose but it’s time for a better quality pack. I’d love to hear any recommendations or personal experiences with reliable backpacks suitable for such trips. Thanks in advance!
The ‘best’ backpack really depends on what fits your body, meets your needs, and matches your budget. I suggest visiting a local REI to try on various packs. Brands like Osprey, Arcteryx, Deuter, Gregory, The North Face, Mountain Hardware, Patagonia, and Mountain Smith are all excellent. You can check out sales on sites like Steep and Cheap, Backcountry, or directly from the manufacturers’ websites, especially during the winter to clear out old stock.

Thanks for the suggestions! I’ll definitely check them out.

It’s essential to choose a pack that fits your back length or is adjustable. Also, learning how to adjust your pack correctly can greatly enhance your hiking comfort. I recommend watching some instructional videos or getting help at a good shop, where they can demonstrate with weights how to adjust the pack properly.
@Skylar
That’s great advice, thanks! I’ll make sure to get a proper fitting.
The best backpack is the one that fits you comfortably. My personal choices are an old ALICE pack, an Osprey Rook 65L, and a Big Agnes Ditch Rider 32L. Brands like Osprey, Gregory, Deuter, Eberlestock, Mystery Ranch, Big Agnes, Exo Mtn Gear, and Tactical Tailor offer great options, but it all boils down to what suits your body shape and hiking needs.

Appreciate your insights! I’ll look into those options.
My top pick for a backpack is the Durston Kakwa 55. It’s been fantastic for my trips.
