New Pack for the Day

Needed a replacement for my day hike pack and took advantage of REI’s sale to pick up a Mystery Ranch Coulee 20. It will have its first hike this weekend, but I like it so far. It would be plenty for a warm weather overnight if you can source water at the destination.

This is my first Mystery Ranch, so I’m ready to see what all the hubbub is about.

good choice! I have their 25L gallagator. carrying it doesn’t put a strain on your back

@Kai
That’s good to hear, and that looks like an awesome hike.

I suspect you’ll be really happy with it.

I have their 19L Gallagator model, and it looks really similar. I love mine.

I love mystery ranch and this bag is going to treat you well. I have a scree 32 as my day pack and could actually do an overnight with it if I wanted. It’s the most comfortable bag I’ve ever had and after owning it I don’t think I’ll ever own anything other than mystery ranch.

@Jael
I frequently do quick overnights in my scree 32, carrying my bear vault inside as well. Love my mystery ranch bags.

I have a Dana Designs (predecessor of Mystery Ranch) that I got in the early 90s. Its still in perfect shape. Good gear.

I literally received this exact pack today!!

I’ve got a daily carry/computer backpack from them as well as a Sphinx 60 for hikes. I like them quite a lot.

Nice, I have the 40 as my rescue pack and love it. The full length zipper makes it very easy to access just about anything, but I was surprised by how easily it closes as well.

How do you find the full length zipper handles keeping your load closed to your spine/centre of gravity?

So far it works ok, but I haven’t had a real hike with it yet.

I never will understand putting a failure point in the middle of the pack. It does look burly and heavy duty though.

I’ve got a mystery ranch 2 day bag. That zipper is tough as nails. I’ve had pretty good brand packs that the fabric alone is probably more of a failure point than that zipper. You could probably do a tug of war with it between two lawnmowers and that zipper would win.

Looks similar to my Boreas Sapa Trek, which I really like but wasn’t really that durable.Both the backpack and the company R.I.P. :frowning:

A great choice!

Ive heard they barrel under heavy load.

I’ve not heard that terminology. What do you mean by “barrel”

I shouldn’t get too heavy. I have a larger pack if I need to carry more or a heavier load.
