Mittens for Winter Hiking?

Hi all. I’m gearing up for more hiking this winter and wondering if anyone has recommendations for mittens or gloves that pair nicely with trekking poles. Is layering a good idea? Thanks for any advice.

Layering works for me. I usually wear a thin liner glove underneath a thicker mitten. It gives me better grip on the poles and keeps my hands warm. The mittens shouldn’t be too bulky.

I’d suggest you look into mittens with a split-finger design. They let you grip the poles better while still keeping your fingers warm. Plus, you can take off the top part when you need more dexterity.

How about heated gloves? I tried them last winter, and they’re super cool. They are a bit pricey, but if you’re out in the cold for long, it’s worth it. Just be careful with the battery pack—it can be a bit bulky when using poles.

I’ve really struggled with cold fingers in the past. I once went for a hike with regular gloves, and my fingers felt like ice cubes but now I use mittens with a built-in pocket for hand warmers. Lifesaver…

I love the idea of heated gloves. Any specific brands you recommend?

Check out Outdoor Research heated gloves.

I had a pair of gloves that started falling apart after a few hikes. Look for something with a good grip and strong material. It’ll save you from buying new ones every season. Durability matters.

I’ll definitely check out the materials. Btw how do you guys handle sweaty hands when hiking?

Definitely ook for gloves or mittens that have some ventilation. That’ll help with sweaty hands.

Or you can just take breaks to air out your hands, sounds silly, but it works. Just shake them out every once in a while.

Yeah, I call it the ‘fiddler’s dance’. Just whip those gloves off and wave them around like a weirdo. :joy: At least you’ll be warm and a little silly.
