Hey y’all… I’m gearing up for a trip to some desert locations out west, and I want to pack super light. I’m on the hunt for a hiking shoe (not a boot) with either a collapsible heel or no heel counter at all. I’ve heard these are easier to pack. Even something with a soft, flexible upper could work.
I’m an experienced hiker but won’t be wearing them constantly and need something I can pack small in my backpack. Also, I’d like shoes with durable soles because I’ll be dealing with rocky ground. Not considering my trail runners ‘cause I need something sturdier. Any brands or shoe suggestions? Appreciate any recs

Good one, just check out the Merrell Hydro Mocs or similar styles. They’re collapsible, but still have a decent sole for hiking. Plus, they double as water shoes, which could be handy if you’re near rivers or streams.

The Altra Lone Peaks aren’t really that collapsible but they’ve got a wide toe box and a flexible upper. Super comfy for rocky terrain, but still lightweight.

Thank me later, the Xero Shoes Z-Trek sandals are the deal.

I never thought about sandals, but I’m kinda worried they wouldn’t give enough protection on the rocks. Have you hiked in rough terrain with those?
I used them for a backpacking trip in Arizona and they worked well for me. You could also try the Keen Howser. It’s more of a casual shoe, but the heel folds down and the sole is pretty sturdy. Not sure if it’ll hold up on really rough terrain though.
I was going to suggest Vivobarefoot but I think the Primus Lite III are better, they are great for packing, but not the best for rocky trails. Go for any… they are all solid choices.
