Is there such a thing as a waterproof vest?

I loathe rain jackets and don’t really mind getting rain on my arms, and am wondering if anyone knows of any waterproof vests. I’ve spent quite a bit of time searching and they seem to be almost non-existent.

Ponchos?

I have one and do like it, but sometimes want a little more arm mobility.

Froggs Toggs poncho’s are super light, you can use or not use the snaps, it’s long enough to cover your pack. And they are cheap as hell. I don’t mind wet arms, but I do like to be able to pull my arms in and control just how wet they get.

Thanks!

Trash bag?

If you’re looking at just a thin shell, look at cycling apparel. I own a good number of vests that are for cycling and are highly water resistant almost waterproof. Pearl Izumi is a big name brand. Also year ago I owned a fleece vest by Mountain Hardware that the front face of it was wind and waterproof. It was aimed at skiing. Not sure if they exist though

@Nico
Thanks, I didn’t even think about cycling apparel. Also stumbled across sailing gear, and Helly Hansen makes a waterproof vest. https://www.hellyhansen.com/en_us/w-crew-vest-20-34451?color=290548

I’ve got a Patagonia Adze vest. It’s lightweight Polartec Windbloc with a DWR finish. It’s pretty water resistant. They are discontinued, but you can find them used.

Golf tops. There is a Columbia Outdry (waterproof, breathable material, no PFCs) short sleeved jacket called the outdry extreme ss. It doesn’t have a hood.

I’ve modified Outdry using PSA tape and given the single skin, non woven, material, you could just cut the arms off. Maybe make a little hem by sewing or using PSA tape.

@Alden
Good to know, thanks. I’m not even remotely interested in golf so I never considered looking at any of those brands.

Do you happen to have any links? I checked but couldn’t find actual waterproof ones. (Just soft shell/water resistant.)

I took a look at the website and can’t find the model I recently bought in store, which was just a DWR coated windbreaker.

I’m actually shocked by how many of these things there are after a quick google search… This might be the one piece of rain gear I find stranger than a backpacking umbrella. If you stick to warm weather outings, you could just put a layering system together that insulates when wet and dries quickly.
