It’ll be about 8 miles in light snow back and forth, we’re all in college so I’m wondering would it be good to bring some gear and if so what type of gear should I buy? Thanks in advance
Appropriate footwear, spikes, a liter of water, 2 energy bars, a pocket knife, and a lighter are essentials! Considering it gets dark early, especially in NY, a headlight is a great idea. Any affordable headlight recommendations would be much appreciated.
Check out ‘The 10 essentials’ for hiking; it’s crucial for safety. Since you’re hiking in light snow, carry a map and compass and know how to use them. Trail markers can be hidden under snow, so these tools are vital. Also, consider bringing an emergency bivy sack, a fire starting kit, extra food, snacks, and water. Having extra water is essential, even though it adds weight, as it’s easy to underestimate consumption, especially in cold weather. Don’t forget a first aid kit (FAK).

Will do, thanks for the advice!
For group hikes, never wander off alone; it’s easier to get lost than you might think. Pair up with someone who keeps a similar pace. Consider using walkie-talkies—one for the group leader and another for the slowest hiker. If anyone falls behind, they can communicate with the group. Using orange chalk to mark unclear trails can help the group stay on the right path. Always ensure everyone is accounted for at the end of the hike. Keeping a list of everyone’s contact information can be helpful for this purpose.
