I bought a pair of Salomon Speedcross 6 Goretex back in August and have logged about 100 miles on them. Now the toe box is peeling off a bit, and I was hoping they would last much longer! Most of my hikes are in Bryce Canyon, plus some trails like Angels Landing and Delta Lake in the Tetons.
Am I doing something wrong in how I’m treating them, or are they just not that durable?
Salomon quality has really dropped recently, sadly. I’ve worn out three pairs of Quest 4s and two pairs of Pioneers in no time at all.
Generally speaking, trail runners only last between 300-500 miles. They’re lightweight but not designed to be super durable. If durability is the goal, boots are usually a better choice. They have more rigid midsoles, which help with support too.
I mostly use boots now, especially for rougher terrain. My current pairs are the Asolo Fugitive GTX and TPS 520 GV Evo. The Fugitive GTXs are still pretty new, maybe around 90 miles, but my 520s have seen quite a bit and are still holding up well. I’ve tested a few pairs over the years, and Asolo quality hasn’t let me down yet!
Long story short: if you’re looking for something that lasts, boots tend to offer a bit more durability and support than trail runners.
Salomons held up for about 600-700 miles for me but started failing just under a year. I recently switched to Hokas, which I read last around 300-400 miles. They’re insanely comfortable, though, and the waterproofing is fantastic.
Typically, mine last between 500-1000 miles. It really depends on how you maintain them, the terrain, and your body weight. Also, wearing them on roads can wear them down faster. I usually average around 700 miles on mine with a mix of trails and sidewalks.
I’ve worn Salomon trail runners for years, and their quality has dropped. They seem to wear down much faster. I’m a 105lbs female, so it’s not like I’m putting a ton of strain on them! Considering La Sportiva for my next pair.
My Merrell Moab 2 Vents (I skip the waterproof version) have lasted 4 years. Stitching is tight, and they still grip on all kinds of trails: rocks, loose stones, dirt, sand, and roots. Love these shoes!
