GoreTex Jacket Lost Waterproofing After Washing With Regular Laundry Liquid... Help

I’ve been washing my GoreTex jacket with regular biological laundry liquid and now it seems to have lost its waterproof properties. Is there any way to restore its functionality, or is my only option to buy a new one?

You should stop using regular laundry detergent and switch to Nikwax products, which are specifically designed for waterproof clothing. You can also reproof your jacket using these products. I treat my Paramo jacket with them about once a year.

Do you normally wash it only once a year? I’ve just bought the Nikwax spray.

Is it possible to use those products to waterproof a regular puffer jacket made from synthetic materials, or is it better to just use a water-repellant spray occasionally?

Washing your jacket shouldn’t damage the GoreTex layer itself. What might happen is the removal of the DWR coating that causes water to bead and run off. You can buy DWR restoring liquid to fix this. But in the future, use a detergent specifically made for such garments.

It’s crucial to always use specialty cleaners specifically made for outdoor gear when washing. NikWax is a popular choice and their products work very well. Gear Aid also makes similar products.

Do you guys actually wash your jackets?

It’s a rain jacket, just rinse it off.

You need to wash it before treating it with Nikwax DWR products. Sportwash is an excellent product for washing waterproof outerwear. It also helps remove odors from polyester clothing.

@Hayden
I’ve been hiking and backpacking for 25 years and have never treated any of my gear.

You should never use regular detergent on GoreTex or any waterproof garment. As already mentioned, products like Nikwax Tech-Wash, TX-Direct wash-in, and spray-on are your best options.
