I’m an in-person shopper, but I have a hiking trip in Japan next month, and I won’t be back in time to shop. I’m pretty well-prepared, except I need a good pair of warmer, water-repellent pants for the colder days. The long-range forecast shows rain, and while I have a large poncho for coverage, I don’t want to deal with soggy shins all day. I don’t need anything too heavy-duty, just something for moderate rain. Any suggestions?
Rain pants usually trap heat, so they’ll naturally help with warmth. I have a pair of REI Rainier pants that do the job. I’ve worn them in heavy rain and as snow pants in a pinch. If you don’t hike in rain often and just need emergency gear, these are a great budget option. I think I got them for $18 on sale.

I work on the ocean, so I’ve got plenty of rain gear! But for this trip, I’m packing light and want something I can also wear in cities after the hike.

Username checks out, in that case!
If your shins are the issue, try GTX gaiters. They’ll add warmth and protection. Softshell pants might be exactly what you’re looking for. They’re wind- and water-resistant, and some are fleece-lined for warmth. Many brands offer softshell options. If you can’t find fleece-lined ones, combining softshell pants with merino wool long johns or grid fleece could be a good solution.

Gaiters are genius! I’ll definitely be ordering those. I’ve got some lightweight Carhartt and Helly Hansen softshell pants, but I was looking for something a bit heavier. I’ve been wanting to try out Nordwand Pro pants, as I’ve seen them a lot on trails in Norway, but I’m hesitant to buy online if they’re not exactly what I need. I think the gaiters will be perfect with the pants I already have. Thanks so much!

Happy I could help!
