I found a great deal on an Osprey Talon 22 backpack, but it’s size S/M and I usually wear L/XL based on my torso size. I’m wondering if the smaller size would still be suitable since it’s not a large backpack with lots of weight to distribute. Will the S/M size be too small or uncomfortable for my back, or is it okay to go with this size for a smaller backpack? Thanks for any advice!
It’s likely to be too small on your back and might be uncomfortable.
Backpack size does matter, even for smaller packs. It might become uncomfortable, especially on longer hikes.
Osprey’s sizing can be tricky. I used to fit a M/L but now I’m an L/XL which feels too big. It’s best to try it on and see how it fits, using the size chart just as a guideline.
The backpack might be too small, particularly around the shoulder straps.

I generally avoid Osprey packs as I find them overly complex and not durable enough for my taste. For light hikes, I prefer using a very small pack like a used camel bak, and for slightly longer but still short hikes, a Gregory Nano 18L works great. It’s important to choose the right size if the pack has sized options, especially to ensure the hip belt fits properly.
