Carry-On with My 45L Pack?

Hey all. Quick question—can I take my 45L backpack as a carry-on when flying? Any tips on packing it like a standard carry-on bag? Should I use compression straps to make it more compact? Also, any recommendations for stuff sacks in case I need to check it in? Appreciate it.

That’s totally doable. Just make sure to pack it efficiently. Use packing cubes; they really help to organize everything. And yeah, those compression straps work wonders. Just keep in mind the airline’s size restrictions.

Honestly, I’d be cautious about the weight limit too. Some airlines don’t just check size but also how heavy it is. I once got called out for having a ‘heavy’ carry-on.

I once had my backpack filled with snacks and got pulled aside for inspection. You’d be surprised how much they care about food :joy: Just pack smart and you should be good.

Maybe think about stashing a foldable duffle bag as your secret weapon. I had a buddy who whipped one out when they had to check their big pack, saved their trip and probably their sanity too

Thanks guys, Any of you all think I should go for a specific brand of stuff sack? Any favorites?

Sea to Summit stuff sacks, lightweight and super durable. What do you plan to pack in it?

I’m planning on packing clothes and maybe my hiking boots. I might need a big sack for those. How do I keep them from smelling up my bag?

Try putting them in a mesh laundry bag or even a breathable shoe bag. Keeps them contained and your clothes fresh. Trust me, your travel mates will thank you :joy:

Or just embrace the smell; it adds character  But seriously, those mesh bags are great. I’ve used them for wet gear too, they let everything breathe.

I’ll grab a mesh bag for sure. You guys are lifesavers. Can’t wait for my trip

Don’t forget to sneak in some snacks. I once packed an entire cheese wheel for a trip—best decision ever.
