Best Boots for Cloud Forest? Any Recommendation?

I’m heading to a tropical cloud forest for some fieldwork and need a solid pair of hiking boots. This is my first time buying proper hiking boots, so I’m a bit lost on what to look for. My budget is around $80-100, though I could stretch a little if it’s worth it. I’ve read that waterproof and breathable boots are essential, and I’ll need soles that don’t turn into mud magnets. I’ll be there for about four months, so they definitely need to last.

Would love any recommendations or tips from you all…

Last year when I went to Costa Rica I picked up a pair of Columbia Redmond Waterproof boots. They were just under $100, and honestly, they held up like champs. They kept my feet dry and didn’t get bogged down with mud, which was a lifesaver. Might be worth checking out…

Honestly, I’d say look into second-hand options if you’re on a budget. I snagged a pair of Salomon X Ultra 3s on eBay for about $70, and they were practically new. Waterproof, breathable, and they didn’t gunk up with mud. With your timeline, durability is key, so sometimes second-hand quality boots are better than new ones at the same price.

I’ve been through a few pairs in my time, and I gotta say, for your budget, the Merrell Moab 2 is a solid choice. They’re right at the top of your range, but they’re tough as nails and comfy too. Plus, the Vibram soles are great for shedding mud. Used mine in a rainforest in Panama, and they didn’t disappoint.

I’d avoid the cheaper boots if you’re out there for months. Learned that the hard way in the Amazon. The soles wore out fast, and my feet were soaked half the time. If you can stretch your budget a bit, go for the higher-end boots. Trust me, it’s worth it for your feet’s sake.

Keen Targhee IIIs are a bit above your budget, but they’re durable and comfortable. My buddy used them on a trip to Peru, and he swears by them for muddy trails. Might be worth considering if you’re in it for the long haul.

If you don’t mind breaking them in, check out Hi-Tec’s Altitude IV. They’re usually around $70-80, and once they’re broken in, they’re pretty decent for wet conditions. Had a pair on a week-long trip in Hawaii and didn’t have any issues. Just make sure you wear them a bit before heading out.

I agree with everyone about the waterproofing, but breathability is just as important. I had a pair of boots that were waterproof but not breathable, and my feet were drenched in sweat by the end of the day. So, definitely aim for something that balances both. Maybe take a look at the Vasque Breeze boots—they’re right around your budget and have good reviews for being breathable.
