Asking for shoes recommendations

I’m thinking about getting the PUMA Explore Nitro GoreTex, but some friends recommend me to go for shoes from common outdoor brands like La Sportiva, Salomon, Asics, etc. The PUMA shoes are cheaper, priced around 500-700 MYR (about 100-200 USD). I’ve been using the non-GoreTex version of these shoes, which were comfortable and light. Most of my hiking involves day hikes on wet trails, crossing small rivers, and sometimes flooded trails, causing my shoes to get wet frequently. I had to wash them several times using vinegar and baking soda to eliminate odors. I’m considering upgrading to waterproof shoes or boots for better protection. What do you guys think? Should I buy these or save a bit more for a well-known outdoor brand?

Puma isn’t typically known for hiking shoes. They’re more of a fashion-oriented ‘hiking shoe’. I’d recommend choosing a dedicated hiking shoe or boot from a brand known for outdoor gear. Do some research and try different fits at an outdoor store like REI.

I’d suggest researching and reading online reviews before making a decision. Established outdoor brands often have well-tested products that have been refined over several iterations. While PUMA might offer a functional boot, brands like La Sportiva and Salomon have a proven track record in making durable and reliable hiking footwear.

@Shaye
Thanks for the advice. I’ve looked online but haven’t found many reviews on this particular model. The reviews I did find were not very detailed, mostly showcasing the shoe without much commentary on performance.

It’s better to choose a brand with a strong reputation in hiking gear. Try different options and pick the one that fits best. Look for features like good insoles and socks that suit your hiking needs. Be wary of brands that have declined in quality over the years.

@Casey
Exactly, I’ve had great experiences with certain brands like Salomon, although I’ve noticed a drop in their quality recently. Make sure to try them on later in the day when your feet are at their largest to ensure a good fit.

@Casey
Appreciate the tips! I’ll make sure to check the fit carefully.

I recommend looking at lightweight trail runners with a rock plate and wool socks for better comfort during hikes. Waterproof high-top trail runners are also a good choice if you need to keep dry.

For wet conditions, waterproof shoes like the Altra Lone Peak with a rock plate are beneficial.

I’ve been using Salomon shoes, and they’ve worked out great for me. The lack of traditional laces might not be for everyone, but the overall performance has been satisfactory.

Which model are you using? I’m considering several options.

@Micah
I’m using the X Ultra 4 Gore-Tex. They’re breathable, comfortable, and not too bulky.

I recommend Brooks Cascadias. Also, I’d advise against Gortex shoes unless you really need the waterproofing.

While the PUMA Explore Nitro Gore-Tex might seem like a good budget option, considering the robust features and long-term reliability of established outdoor brands might be worthwhile, especially if you plan on frequent hiking in challenging conditions.

@Sunny
Thanks for breaking it down for me. It’s clear I should consider how much I’ll be using these and in what conditions before making a choice.

Consider purchasing from a retailer with a good return policy like REI, where you can test the shoes and return them if they don’t meet your expectations. This way, you can try multiple pairs to find the perfect fit.
