Appreciate any help as need to order this daypack by end of day to get here before I leave on Monday.
I am hiking Volcan Acatenango and purchased the Aether 55L. I plan to hire a porter for the hike to base camp and would like to pack a daypack within the 55L that is pre-packed with my camera gear and 1.5L of water. Estimated weight 15LBs. Need something lower profile but able to support 20lbs or less.
I received advice yesterday on doing this as the porters don’t always stay with group and may arrive to base camp before me.
There seems to be a few versatile options around 20L, but was hopeful someone else might have already considered this combination before and could share their experience. Thank you!
Not sure how much weight you are wanting to carry in your daypack - but - first thought was EXPED Splash 15 (rolls up small in your pack - guessing by the photos)
I’m thinking maybe what I should do is bring my camera gear and 1L of water to test a few at REI. Unfortunately it’s not close to me but could make the trip this weekend.
I’m looking at roughly 10-15LBs in the day pack. Camera gear and battery packs weigh 10lbs. 1-2L of water is 2-4LBS. Snacks round it out.
Do you think this much weight for a 5,000ft elevation gain hike needs hip support belts?
@Jules
Based on what you are looking to do and pack - I would remove all of my pack suggestions - and - check out the weight limits for the packs you might be considering.
The other factor - is how well the day pack fits in the main bag along with your other gear.
A trip to REI probably not a bad idea - but you can get a preview of the packs in their app.
Look into running vests. They pack down small, I bring my Black Diamond Distance 8 backpacking a lot. They make ones with more capacity if you need it.

I think that could work if I wasn’t bringing camera gear, but am wanting to carry my FF camera and two lenses separate from the porter carrying my 55L bag so it’s accessible / doesn’t get lost along with a liter or two of water.

They make up to 22L thats probably more than enough space.
Oh wow, had no idea. When I thought vest I figured it would be similar to the Scotty Vest for travel with a bunch of pockets. I’ll look into that, thanks!
The Matador Beast 28 might be worth a look. Still pretty lightweight (1.5 lbs) and stashes really well, but has a light steel wire frame to provide a bit of support. I’ve carried my FF DSLR with 24-70 f2.8 in it with day hiking stuff and 2 liters of water. Not the most comfortable hike ever, but it works.
