A small tool to help an arachnophobe on the trail?

I just hold a stick out in front of me while hiking. Works for me!

When I’m biking, I put a little branch in my helmet so it catches the webs before they get to my face.

I’ve done that too! But it’s tricky having one hand taken up, and I like going a bit faster without constantly moving the stick around. But yeah, for most people, that’s probably enough!

@Merlin
Wait, so this chain doesn’t use up one of your hands or slow you down?

Exactly! Still takes up a hand and you’d still have to move it around to catch webs. Sounds like a bit of an over-complicated fix.

@Quillan
Agreed. Especially since ultralight hikers already use trekking poles, which double as web sweepers. I’d just use my existing gear.

That’s how I earned the nickname ‘Trail Ninja’ :wink:

I play disc golf in the forests on the east coast. When it’s spider season, you’ve gotta be swinging like a ninja out there!

I use my trekking pole for this.

I tried that too, but it slowed me down and didn’t catch all the webs. Trekking poles are definitely lighter than a stick though!

But doesn’t the chain still need a hand?

@Rory
You can still carry things or grip with the chain in your hand!

You can use your hands while holding trekking poles too, thanks to the straps.

Stick

I just swing my trekking pole up and down in front of me… nothing fancy.

I wave my trekking pole around in front of me too.

Ok

I just let my wife walk ahead of me – she gets all the webs, and I get the view!

This reminds me of a joke about using Pi… but I get it, it’s a clever setup!
