Winter Hiking Gear Recommendations Needed

This is my first year getting into hiking, and I’m about to start winter hiking for the first time! I live in Ohio, so the trails I’m hitting are relatively mild, averaging between 4-6 miles with 200-600ft of elevation. I’ve got insulated Keen waterproof boots and smartwool socks, along with a puffer jacket. What other essential clothing should I consider for the colder months?

Invest in a good base layer that wicks moisture and dries quickly. It doesn’t have to be expensive but should be effective.

For temperatures around 15°F to 20°F, here’s my standard gear list which includes multiple layers and items for sleeping, trekking, and emergency situations. Remember to adjust your gear based on the specific weather conditions you expect.

Don’t forget a shell jacket, and possibly shell pants, to protect against wind and wet conditions.

Could you provide more details such as your gender, age, the specific temperatures you’re planning to hike in, and your budget? This information will help in recommending the most suitable gear.

I’m a 29-year-old woman, hiking with my dog, and don’t plan on hiking in temperatures below 10°F. I’m on a student budget but can spend a bit more for durable items. I’m specifically looking for advice on pants as multiple layers of leggings haven’t been sufficient. I recently hiked in a long sleeve, an LL Bean fleece, and my puffer jacket but felt a bit constricted.

Thanks for the info! Based on your needs, consider investing in softshell pants for more insulation and flexibility. Also, look for upper body layers that offer more room for movement and can be easily adjusted as your body temperature changes during the hike.
