What's your go-to method to tie hiking shoes?

Hey y’all. When it comes to lacing up hiking shoes, especially the ones with those metal eyelets or hooks at the top, how do you do it? I usually just go for whatever feels good, but I’m wondering if there are better ways for things like ankle support or hiking on different terrains. What’s your go-to method?

I always go for the “heel lock” method, where you cross the laces around those top hooks and tie it tight. Keeps my heel from sliding around inside the boot on steep hikes. It’s very helpful for preventing blisters as well. You can refer to the diagram.

I’ve been using the “bunny ears” tie since I was a kid, :joy: :joy:. No fancy techniques here. I just like to keep it simple and it works best.

Is it solid enough or do you notice any issues with ankle support with this bunny technique?

For me I just lace 'em loose up top. I don’t like feeling constricted around my ankles, especially on long hikes.

No one uses the “surgeon knot?” I use it on the top hooks. It keeps the laces from loosening during long hikes, especially if you’re doing switchbacks or steep climbs.

Man, I used to lace too tight and ended up with numb toes after a few hours. Now I keep the middle loose and only tighten around the top hooks.

I always do a double loop on the hooks so my laces stay in place, but I hate having to constantly adjust them on steep descents. My boots don’t always cooperate :joy: :joy: :joy:.
