What Must-Have Gear Should I Bring Along?

Hey folks, so I’m kinda just starting to get into hiking and wanna make sure I’m packing all the right stuff. I’m 18, female, and trying to be ready for anything the trail throws my way. What’s your go-to gear or gadget that you think I shouldn’t leave home without? Oh, and I once borrowed a friend’s trekking poles and realized I had no idea what I was doing, so yeah, tips are welcome too.

I never hit the trail without a good multi-tool. It’s saved me more times than I can count—like when I needed to cut through some tangled fishing line or fix a broken strap on my pack. It’s small, easy to carry, and just super handy for all those “uh-oh” moments.

I totally second the multi-tool idea. Good one @CrystalCompass. But also, hydration is key. I can’t stress enough how important it is to have a good hydration system. I used to just carry water bottles, but then I switched to a hydration bladder, and it made such a difference. It’s easier to stay hydrated when you can just sip as you go without stopping. Game-changer for me.

What is a hydration bladder, I’m lost

A hydration bladder is this flexible water pouch that fits in your backpack, letting you drink on the go through a tube. Got it now…

One thing I always carry is a headlamp. Even if you don’t plan to hike in the dark, stuff happens, and you might get stuck out there longer than you think.

I see you already mentioned trying out trekking poles. When I first used them, I felt like an awkward duck, but now I can’t hike without them. They take so much pressure off your knees and help with balance, especially on uneven terrain. Took me a bit to get the hang of them, but they’re worth it.

My top pick is a lightweight rain jacket. You never know when the weather’s gonna turn, and staying dry can make all the difference in your comfort and safety. I remember when I got caught in a downpour once with nothing but a hoodie—learned my lesson the hard way…
