What are the best hiking shoes for beginners

I’ve started hiking recently and need a reliable pair of women’s hiking shoes. I usually hike for about 4 to 7 hours on trails with some steep and rocky sections. I’m looking for shoes that are waterproof, comfortable, and breathable for the warmer months. Any suggestions for shoes that are lightweight with good grip would be great. Thanks!

It’s tough to find a shoe that’s both waterproof and breathable, especially in summer. I switch between Gore-Tex boots for winter and trail runners for the rest. On wet days, I use waterproof socks. Some brands to consider based on your foot shape are Hoka, Altra, Brooks, and Saucony. It’s best to try a few on at a store.

The right fit is crucial. I recommend visiting a store like REI to try on various models. The Merrell Moab is a popular choice for light hiking boots and might suit your needs.

As others have mentioned, it’s hard to get both breathability and waterproofing in one shoe. Opt for good wool-based socks to help manage warmth. For budget-friendly mid-cut boots, the Merrell Moab 3 offers decent performance at a fair price, although it may not be the most durable option.

I’ve been using Meindl Caracas boots for all my hiking seasons. They lasted 22 years with two resoles. They’re very comfortable once broken in and are fairly breathable in the summer.

Check out the On cloudrock boots; they are my current favorite. Very comfortable and perform well on different terrains!

Consider the Lowa Renegade. There really aren’t ‘beginner’ shoes, just ones that fit well and those that don’t.
