Tips on waxing jackets

I’ve been looking into waxing my hiking jackets and pants (different brands, all nylon/polyester mix). Seen stuff from Filson and Barbour, but they say to use their wax for their gear. Anyone tried it on other brands?

I used Filson wax on an old Columbia jacket—worked fine. Just be ready for it to smell like a lumberjack’s coat for a bit.

I used Greenland wax on a non-Fjällraven jacket, and it wasn’t great. It didn’t stick right. Maybe it’s the fabric? Stick to their recommendations, or you might just end up with a sticky mess.

Tried waxing my Patagonia backpack once… mistake. Looked like a crime scene afterward, LOL. I think wax is best for old-school cotton or canvas stuff. Modern fabrics get weird.

Haha, noted. Definitely avoiding the crime scene look. I have some older canvas pants, though, so maybe I’ll give them a go instead. Maybe the wax gods will be kinder to those!

Greenland wax on my Marmot pants actually worked, i used it sparingly, though. I camp in Washington, so extra waterproofing is a must. Just make sure to test a small area first.

I waxed a random Walmart jacket once just to see. It ended up smelling like wet dog, but hey, it kept me dry. Wax is weird like that—super hit or miss.

Haha, the “lumberjack smell” sounds oddly tempting. I do like the idea of rugged vibes, so maybe it’s a win-win? Might have to try it out this weekend.

Have you tried using it in snow, though? My waxed jacket got stiff, like I was walking in cardboard. Not sure if I applied too much.
