The gray area between hiking and trail running: built for the presidential range of NH

An Arcteryx beanie is a must for this kind of activity.

OP, you should give fastpacking a try; it’s very fun.

I would, but I like to do hikes in one day.

Ah, fair enough.

Big fan of tailwind. What’s the orange do-hickey above your blue hip bag on the left? Also, the super tiny purple square bag? haha

The orange thing is an old little multitool thing with a compass, waterproof matches, and a whistle. The purple bag is a CPR face shield, as the commenter below said!

@Flann
I need one of those.

Hard to tell, but I think it says CPR face shield.

I do the same thing. Really like that thin line between trail running and hiking. Our group just did a three-day backpacking loop at the Grand Canyon in 12 hours.

Sick! I went down South Kaibab and up Bright Angel in 9:50 and it was amazing. Really hard but incredible views.

@Flann
Have two friends that can hike R2R2R in 14 hours and change. They never stop moving and fill up on water quickly. All without running a single stride.

I’m pushing 60, so my 12 minute trail running miles have been replaced with 14-15 minute hiking miles. I’m now 5-10 minutes slower on my training loops, but miraculously all of my running related injuries have disappeared.

Did the Presidential Range for the first time this June, it was awesome; took me and my group about 20 hours.

I live in that gray area, but with an 18L Miwok, an incredibly full-featured pack for its size. Nice setup.

Love the gloves!

Does anyone else see a Lobster??

If I was spending time up on the Presidential Range, I would think you should grab an emergency bivy. If you get stuck up there without, you might have a bad time.
