Superior Rain Gear

We all know that the best way to protect yourself from the rain is with an umbrella. But the problem is that you always have an umbrella in one hand. Of course there are holders with which you can attach the umbrella to the backpack, but in my experience it is not ideal. But now I’ve come across the solution: rain hats. Does anyone have experience?

Holy shit. that’s wild!

Loool no thanks. Just take a waterproof hat, a top with a hood or head cover. This thing in the pic is a big no for me.

Just get a Hardshell jacket for the rain.

A hardshell jacket has its place, but an umbrella is better for medium wind and heavy rain. Better ventilation, greater coverage that also covers your equipment, more flexible, quick to pack/unpack, and your senses aren’t restricted by a hood. You should try an umbrella if you haven’t already ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

@Cameron
Umbrella is more weight, and heavy rain doesn’t always fall straight. If you have a good hardshell, they will have ventilation under your arms. Your equipment is in your backpack, right? If so, get a better backpack or a lightweight rain cover.

@Lane
Good hiking umbrellas weigh between 90 and 250 grams (0.19 to 0.55 lbs). True, heavy rain and wind can be a problem, but for most conditions, it works well. As for ventilation, you’re right, but an umbrella gives more airflow.

I expected a frog on a poncho at first! Yes, solid option, but I’d still prefer an umbrella in medium wind/rain.

Neat idea, but it looks wildly uncomfortable, especially to someone like me who gets migraines. I’ll stick to my rain jacket.

I almost spit my coffee out reading ‘the best way to protect yourself from rain is with an umbrella.’ Thanks for the laugh!

I live in Vancouver. We just had a rainstorm that washed houses into rivers. That thing would last about 2 minutes! For me, the best rain protection is a lightweight, oversized hooded rain shell and a long-peaked ball cap.

I never use an umbrella. I stick with jackets that have hoods—one for warm weather, one for cold.

Torrentshell is the best rain jacket I’ve found. Umbrella for light rain.
