Seeking Recommendations for Hiking Shoes Suitable for Tropical Climates

I live in a very sunny and humid tropical region of Southeast Asia. My current Merrell Moabs Goretexx shoes, which were great for European climates, are too hot here. I’m considering sandals for better breathability and need suggestions for non-slip, grippy, and waterproof options, as it rains frequently here. I’ve heard about Tevas and Keen. If anyone has experiences with these or other suitable hiking sandals for wide feet, please share.

It’s tough to find breathability combined with waterproof features. In the tropics, it might be better to choose non-waterproof footwear and change socks often to manage wetness. Options like the Rocky S2V, Garmont T8, or Belleville boots offer great breathability and traction. For trail running shoes, consider brands like Altra, Saucony, or Hoka.

Thanks for the recommendations! However, I’m concerned that frequently wet feet could lead to fungal issues.

Gore-Tex boots may actually increase the risk of fungal infections due to constant sweat. Soldiers in tropical environments often use quick-drying, non-waterproof boots and manage foot health with frequent sock changes and good hygiene, including using foot powder like Gold Bond Triple Action.

On a hiking trip in Vietnam, we were advised against Gore-Tex and opted for La Sportiva Trail runners, which worked well. Removing insoles at night aids drying, and using foot powder can help prevent moisture-related issues. I also brought Chacos for casual use.

Consider Saucony Exodus for a reliable choice in humid conditions.

For sandals, Chacos could be a good fit. They offer solid footbeds with decent arch support and are available in wide sizes.

They are also available in wide sizes, which should suit your needs well.

Bedrock sandals are another excellent option. They’re designed with an anatomical shape suitable for wide feet, feature Vibram soles, and offer different cushion levels. For quick-drying sneakers, Altra’s Lone Peaks with a wide toe box are a good choice.

Try the Saucony Peregrine in wide sizes. They are well-suited for humid and wet conditions.

Teva trail sandals might be what you’re looking for. They’re designed to be non-slip and are well-suited for wet and humid environments.

Meindl Mondello Mid GTX boots are lightweight and breathable, making them suitable for summer. They are waterproof and offer a comfortable fit for wide feet. I’ve used them in both summer and winter conditions successfully.
