Seeking Hiking Shoe Recommendations for the Scotland Highlands

Hello, first time posting here. I’m a casual hiker preparing for some hikes in the Scotland Highlands. I typically wear bobs for hiking, but they won’t suffice for four 3-hour hikes planned during my trip. I’m looking for shoes that provide ankle support, flexibility, lightweight feel, and terrain sensitivity. Water resistance is essential, but I’m also budget-conscious. Any suggestions for suitable hiking shoes that meet these criteria? I’m based in the USA.

Note: Bobs are slip-on walking shoes by Skechers.

I’m not familiar with bobs, but I swear by Scarpa. They are a bit pricier but worth the investment for their durability and support.

Considering your preference for lightweight and flexible shoes, you might want to try non-waterproof trail runners with extra socks to switch as needed. If you’re set on waterproof, ensure they have a high collar to prevent water entry. Brands like Altra, Hoka, Saucony, Scarpa, and Topo Athletics are good options.

I’ve found that Altra’s quality has declined, except for their Lone Peak high tops which are still suitable for trails. The rest seem better suited for less rugged paths.

I recently bought the Adidas Terrex AX4, a hybrid between a trail runner and low ankle hiking shoe. They’re comfortable with aggressive grips and appear durable. Has anyone else tried these?

It’s important to consider the weather. I use Oboz Sypes which are versatile across various conditions, from light snow to wet mud. They feature a Gore-Tex liner and light leather upper with a 5" cuff. Always ensure the boots fit well, possibly with added insoles like Superfeet. Light hikers with a water-resistant liner are suitable for cold, wet conditions.
