Recommendations for Hiking Apps for Navigation and More

I’m curious about which hiking apps people find most useful for navigation or any other hiking-related features. I’d love to learn about some cool apps that could enhance my hiking experience.

Check out ‘Don’t Forget The Spoon’. It’s great for planning your pack, as it analyzes your gear list and suggests what you might be missing. Here’s the link: Don’t Forget The Spoon

I just discovered this one! Excited to try it out.

It’s also great for assessing gear weight and suggesting lighter alternatives.

You’re welcome!

AllTrails is my go-to app for hiking.

I’ve been using AllTrails for a while and really like it too.

Currently, I’m using both AllTrails and Strava for my hikes.

OSmaps is another good option, especially in the UK.

Still, nothing beats an actual map and compass!

I’ve found AllTrails navigation to be inconsistent, especially in no-service areas. Gaia GPS usually works better for me, but it’s not without its flaws either. Still, a traditional map is the most reliable method.

Have you tried the offline features with a subscription? It’s meant to help in areas without cell service.

Yes, I had the AllTrails subscription but found the offline maps unreliable at times, so I stopped using it as much.

Nothing beats a paper map and compass for reliability. They don’t run out of battery or break easily.

True, although I have managed to break a compass before!

I use Komoot and Outdooractive for planning my hiking routes. They’re free and have robust features for route planning and navigation.

Komoot has been excellent for me, especially with its Pro version allowing for live location sharing, helpful for safety during solo hikes.

I prefer Avenza for consistency in the same hiking areas.

For smaller parks, I use AllTrails for convenience. For more remote areas, I rely on traditional navigation tools like Cammenga 3H, MyTopo maps, and Ranger beads. It’s important to know how to read a map as a backup to any GPS technology.
