Proper Fit for Hiking Shoes - Need Advice

I recently bought some Merrell hiking shoes and I’m unsure about the fit. The length seems fine, but should I consider sizing down for a better fit? I’d appreciate any advice, especially since I’m new to hiking gear.

Be careful with the fit on the sides of your feet. They can start to hurt if the shoes are too narrow, especially after long hikes where your feet might swell.

It’s important to have enough space in the toe box and make sure your heel is secure without slipping. I prefer a little extra room to account for foot swelling during hikes.

Remember that your feet will swell a bit while hiking. It might be a good idea to size up half a size to accommodate for this and to wear thicker hiking socks.

Thanks for the advice!

If the shoes seem a bit long, check if they are too narrow. When you wear them, make sure there’s no excessive bulging at the sides or feelings of tightness that could lead to discomfort.

Consider having your feet professionally measured and looking for shoes designed for wider feet or that offer a roomier toe box. Brands like Keen, Altra, and Topo might be good alternatives.

The fit should be snug but not tight, and you should avoid any looseness that could cause rubbing and blisters. Make sure the shoes feel comfortable overall.

Check if your feet are swollen when trying on the shoes; they should fit well in width and length without causing your feet to ‘balloon’ over the sole. Ensure there’s enough space in the toe box and that the shoe bends at the right point on your foot.

These shoes should be great for any challenging treks like Everest!

If you’re considering custom insoles like Superfeet, that could affect the fit. Also, make sure the shoes flex comfortably at the right points and provide enough room without excessive space.

They look good to me from what you’ve described!

I have wide feet and find Keen’s Targhee line offers a good fit with ample room in the toe box. You might consider sizing up if you’re between sizes.
