Need Suggestions for Waterproof Trousers or Other Innovative Solutions

Living in the UK without waterproof trousers is challenging, especially since I usually wear shorts. When it rains, water seeps into my boots, soaking my pants and causing chafing. I’m considering buying waterproof trousers, but I tend to overheat easily, so I’m reluctant to wear double-layer waterproofs throughout a hike. I’m thinking about wearing shorts and then adding Gore-Tex trousers when it starts raining. I’m concerned about my lower legs getting sweaty, though it would keep my feet dry and protect my upper legs. Has anyone tried using waterproof shorts with gaiters? I’m curious about your setups for staying dry below the waist without overheating.

If you prefer shorts, consider using ankle buffs to keep water and debris out of your shoes. Alternatively, convertible pants can be unzipped when it starts to rain, offering versatility without being too hot.

I’ve switched to wearing lightweight synthetic trousers, which feel like silk and dry quickly. They keep me cool and are effective in rain without making me too hot.

That’s an interesting approach, especially since I haven’t considered ticks much. Can you share the brand or type of trousers you use?

You could try a poncho for upper body and legs coverage, or opt for synthetic trousers treated with DWR for light moisture protection. Softshell trousers are another option that might offer a balance between breathability and water resistance.

Considering the tick risk in the UK, trousers are advisable for protection. Lightweight options like the Kiwi Pro II trousers offer decent waterproofing without being too warm. Convertible trousers provide flexibility although they’re not fully waterproof. For underwear, avoid cotton as it retains moisture; quick-drying materials are better.

Great advice, thank you! I’ll consider the convertible trousers as they might offer the flexibility I need. It’s interesting that there aren’t more waterproof options available in this style.

To combat ticks, products like Smidge or those containing DEET can be effective, though they may degrade synthetic fabrics. For easily donning trousers over boots, look for options with full side zips, such as those from Marmot or Berghaus.
