Need help with a very warm coat for outdoors that is not a "puffy" coat

Hello! Anyone have any recommendations for a men’s outdoor coat brand/model that is very warm but not “puffy”? Points if it’s also waterproof. I had a killer Stio coat that got stolen unfortunately and it looks they only have ski and puffy ones now. Are Marmot coats dependable? Thanks in advance!

I would go with a heavyweight merino wool jacket with an uninsulated jacket with a waterproof-breathable membrane, such as the Patagonia Torrentshell. You’re much better off going with two coats, one an insulating layer and one a waterproof-breathable, uninsulated jacket. It will be more versatile because the insulating layers can breathe while you’re more active. Waterproof jackets, even the ones with waterproof-breathable membranes, do not breathe well enough to be used unless you slow your pace and manage your exertion level very intentionally.

Also, my layers go…

Merino wool baselayer ->

Waffle top (insulation layer 1) ->

Midweight fleece (insulation layer 2) ->

Outdoor Research Ferrosi hoodie or Beyond L6 rain jacket (weather layers) ->

Beyond L5 softshell (outermost layer for extreme cold / static use / dry snow)

You should always implement layers, not a single heavy coat and certainly not a single insulated, waterproof jacket. It will be way too hot to be usable while active.

very nice didn’t think of that!

Anytime!

Always implement layers, friend. You’ll be more comfortable and safe, and it will be much more versatile. :+1:

Could you give any recommendations for a heavyweight merino wool jacket?

I forget the seller, but you can actually find some handmade ones on Etsy. Just be careful which ones you purchase. Check reviews for the items and sellers.

Aside from that, I’d recommend this: Pro Merino 200 Wool Hoodie | KUIU

It’s fleece-lined with a merino outer layer.

There’s also this: Dynawool™ Skuba Hoody in Men's Fleece | KÜHL Clothing

And this, fully merino: Sites-swl-us-Site

Those are probably some of the best brands, so I would look at those items, as well as the brands as a whole.

Let me know if you need more help. I’m happy to assist.

Usually an “outdoor sports” coat will be a waterproof shell (with plenty of zipped ventilation)–the warmth comes from your layers. Or, you can go more “bushcraft” with wool or canvas. Since you’ve posted in r/hikinggear, I’ll share my hiking go-to: Merino base layer + generic wool sweater (very breathable), plus a wool blanket cloak I can throw over if I get cold, without removing my pack. Nice around camp, too, or as an extra layer at night

yes, I am looking to be active in this coat (hiking for a bit then bird photography)
