Need advice on choosing the right size for Lowa Renegade hiking boots… which size should I go for

I’m torn between two sizes of Lowa Renegade hiking boots. In the larger size, my heel moves slightly but I have the recommended 1.5 cm of toe space. In the smaller size, the overall fit feels snug but there’s less than 1 cm of space at the toes. Which size would be better for long hikes?

Did you try them on after a day’s activity when your feet might be swollen? If you like the Renegade, consider the larger size and maybe use thicker insoles or socks, as most hiking boots have basic insoles anyway. Alternatively, you might look for another boot that fits better but still plan to swap out the insoles since those included are often inadequate for serious hiking.

Thanks for your advice! I tried them at the end of the day, though I hadn’t been too active. Any insoles you could suggest?

Sure, I have a few recommendations on insoles that could help. I’ve posted some information on this forum in another discussion thread about hiking footwear.

It’s usually safer to opt for the larger size with hiking boots. Have you tried them on with your typical hiking socks? They can make a difference of about half a shoe size. Also, try them on in the evening after your feet have expanded from the day’s activities, as they can swell up to a full size. Pay attention to how you tie the laces, especially using the heel lock loop near the top to secure your heel. If your toes still touch the front when you kick the floor, consider a larger size and maybe add specialized insoles like SuperFeet to better secure your heel.

I’d recommend going with the larger size. It’s the best boot I’ve ever had.

Don’t forget to wear proper hiking socks to help prevent any slipping inside the boot.
