Need Advice on Choosing Durable Hiking Boots

I’m searching for a reliable pair of mid-height hiking boots but finding it difficult to choose due to mixed reviews online. The Scarpa Mens Rush TRK Pro GTX Boots and Salomon Mens X Ultra 4 Mid GTX Boots have caught my eye. I plan to use them for both single and multi-day hikes. Given the varying opinions, I’m unsure how to proceed and would appreciate any guidance from experienced hikers.

The best way to find the right boots is to visit a reputable outdoor gear shop where you can try different pairs to see what fits best. Online reviews can be skewed towards negative experiences, so take them with a grain of salt. A good store will allow you to test the boots on different surfaces and with various socks to ensure a proper fit.

Absolutely agree. Nothing beats trying on boots in person, especially at stores like REI where the staff is knowledgeable and can provide tailored advice.

I switched from Salomon Quest boots to Lowas due to durability issues with the Salomons, which started wearing out much faster than expected.

It’s crucial to physically try on multiple brands and models to find what truly fits your feet. Remember, comfort is key, and boots should feel good right out of the box. Consider visiting stores later in the day when your feet are more swollen to get a realistic sense of fit. Break in your boots gradually to avoid discomfort during actual hikes.

I’ve been using Salomon boots for years, specifically the X3 and X4 models, and love them, especially the lace locks. But it’s vital to try on different models to see what suits you best.

The Salomon Quest 4d GTX was once a top choice, but recent models seem to have declined in quality. Consider alternatives like Garmont or Zamberlan, which maintain consistent production standards.

Lowa Renegades have been my go-to for comfort right out of the box. More recently, I’ve also been using Altra Lone Peaks for their lightweight design and roomy toe box, which might be something to consider if you prefer a lighter boot for long hikes.
