Is Nikwax Spray Good for Waterproofing?

Hey all, got some new Gore-Tex suede/mesh boots and wondering if Nikwax spray is good for waterproofing? Should I treat them before their first hike? Any advice appreciated…

Yep, Nikwax works great on Gore-Tex. I always spray mine before the first hike. Better safe than soggy, Plus it keeps them looking newer longer.

Nikwax is solid, you definitely need to treat them before you hit the trail. Gore-Tex is good, but a little extra waterproofing never hurts, especially for the suede bits. :sunglasses:

I’ve used Nikwax for years, it’s great on suede, but don’t overdo it—too much can gunk up the mesh. A light spray should be fine for your first hike.

Honestly, Gore-Tex doesn’t really need it out of the box. But Nikwax is a solid backup if you’re hiking in super wet conditions. Suede will thank you, trust me.

I always Nikwax my boots—better to be safe. Treated mine before a rainy hike and stayed dry, while my friend’s untreated pair turned into soggy sponges. Learned my lesson watching her misery.

I’d say yes, but make sure to clean your boots before applying Nikwax, especially after the first hike. Keeps them from getting stiff and gross. It’s more about maintenance long-term.

Thanks, everyone, sounds like it’s worth giving them a light spray. Didn’t think about the mesh clogging up—appreciate the heads-up, @WoodlandWanderer . Will keep it light.

No problem. Just go easy on the spray, especially where the boots flex. You’ll be good to go, and your feet will thank you later.

@MidnightGlyph Exactly, lighter is better. You’ll feel like a pro when your friends are slipping in puddles and you’re still dry. :joy:

Boots last longer too when you give them that extra love with Nikwax. Also, make sure they’re fully dry before you treat 'em

Agreed. Damp boots + Nikwax = bad combo. I learned that the hard way and ended up with sticky boots. Give them a proper drying session first, and you’ll be good to go.

I’ve been there too—sprayed too soon and my boots turned into mud magnets. Now I’m religious about letting them dry first. Lesson learned

Right? It’s like instant mud attraction when they’re still damp. Now I’m super patient with drying time—no more sticky boots for me either.
