I designed and 3D printed a Nalgene handle as a joke but I think it might actually be kind of useful

I think it’s a very practical joke.

Haha. Thanks!

Yes I know it’s kind of ridiculous and stops it from fitting in most bottle pockets but it does have the advantage of no longer rolling away when you knock it over. It also makes it way easier to drink out of the wide-mouth IMO. I suppose its clippable too although I know that’s not always ideal when hiking. I think also it could be useful for people with disabilities.

EDIT: Based on feedback I’ve designed a new version with a hole so that it can be clipped by a carabiner and stay right-way-up. I’ve got to run a test-print before I upload the files but if you’re planning on printing one and you can wait a few hours I’ll have that file uploaded before too long.

For now, if you want this version the model is at the link below for free. If you don’t own a 3D printer then you might find one at a library or community centre that you can use. Alternatively, you might find people locally who print models for a fee. For reference the filament cost is only around 1-2 euros/$2-3 USD

Pretty cool. Maybe if you swap the top screw with a thumb screw or something where its super quick and easy to put on/take off the you could ditch it while hiking but keep the functionality for every day use. I think its a cool enough idea you should probably patent and sell it lol

What might make this super useful. And sorry if it already does this but I don’t see it yet. Is let’s say you’re doing an overnight hike, you carry and use your Nalgene as your normally do, no handle etc. but when you get to the camp site and you’re cooking and relaxing for the eve etc, you pop on the handle and voila you now have a better drinking experience. I can see people using that thing at home too. For instance, I keep my Nalgene in the fridge with cold water just so I can use it while I eat. I’d absolutely pop on a handle when using it, then take it off after to put back in the fridge.

I think it looks nice. Not sure if I would want it while hiking but daily life, sure

This is cool and looks really good!

Ok I want this but I have a neoprene sleeve

@Jules
It doesn’t do that easily, unless you’re willing to carry around an Allen key. But that’s a really good point. I’ll rack my brain and see if I can make a version that’s quick to put on and off. Since this originated from a design that’s intended to secure the bottle for rock climbing, I just continued down the path of a fairly secure fastening setup but I bet I can design something that goes on and off more easily.

@Fox
Cool! Just a thought! If you’re selling this I’d a def get one. I’m into mtn biking, but years back I had a lot of friends who were climbers. They all took their Nalgenes, lashed a piece of cord or rope to it with duct tape and hung it around their neck lol. This was many years ago :slight_smile:

I dig it! That’s fun.

Are you willing to share the file?

Happy Printing!

Super cool!

Nalgene with gloves on a slope…
Lost at least 6 of them…like rolling pocket rockets…
Even got splashed at least 2x times and still dropped it…
Great idea!
Stops it from rolling too!

They. Just. Disappear.

Thanks! Yeah I’m really digging it after a days use!

@Fox
They fly! Thats a better carabiner attach point also.
Mabe add a isolated point to use as a water catcher on rope…keep it upright on a dangle.

I’ve got a model on the go for that specifically but I should add a hole to the handle for clipping, you’re right.

@Fox
Put it up close like a trigger finger on the top inside the handle
