How to Stay Warm in a Hammock … What's Missing Inside

I have a sleeping bag, but the cold air still makes my back cold when I’m in my hammock. What else should I use to stay warm

You should add an insulated layer outside the hammock, like an underquilt with flexible mounting cords. If you put it inside the hammock, you might move it around and compress it, which reduces its effectiveness. Wise Owl makes an affordable one that I use and it works well, though it’s a bit bulky.

Some folks opt for an inflatable pad like a Thermarest or Nemo inside their hammock, or use an underquilt as others have suggested.

Maybe get a hammock partner

An underquilt is best, placed outside the hammock. Alternatively, you could use a blanket underneath you inside the hammock for extra warmth.

A blanket might not suffice if it’s below 55F. An underquilt is superior. I was cozy in Northern Wisconsin last weekend with one.

That’s true. But if you’re on a budget, using blankets you already own is better than an underquilt you don’t have.

If comfort isn’t your main concern for now, use a sleeping pad until you can get an underquilt. Some hammocks, like the Warbonnet Blackbird, have a double layer that allows a pad to slide in. However, underquilts are ultimately the best solution.

Definitely get a good underquilt. Whether you choose down or synthetic depends on your preference. I made a down one myself, but since I’m 6’4", it’s a bit short. I’m planning to buy a longer one soon.

The best solution is an underquilt. If you need a cheaper solution that you might already have, try a sleeping pad in the hammock, even a foam one. If it’s only getting down to the mid-60s at night, a car windshield reflector under your back can also work well.

It depends on the weather. In summer, a layer of Reflectix works if you have a double layer hammock. Otherwise, a sleeping pad can suffice until you’re ready to invest in a high-quality underquilt.
