Hiking for a newbie

I’m looking to get a new hiking pack after a trip with a traditional bag that didn’t go well. I have more hiking adventures planned and I sweat a lot. My back isn’t the best, so I need something supportive and breathable. I’ve read great things about Osprey, Gregory, and Deuter, so I’m considering one of those three unless there’s another good brand. I want a pack for day hikes to carry snacks, lunch, a small camera, and water bottles (not a hydration bladder person), but it should also work for daily use to carry a small laptop or tablet. Between the Talon 22, Stratos 24, Citro 24/30, and Inertia 24, which is the best pack, and do you have any other recommendations?

I’m a huge Osprey fan. They are particularly good for comfort and breathability. Ideally, you’d try it on for a proper fit, but you can also measure your torso length to ensure you get the right size.

@Rey
Agreed! Osprey is my go-to!

I’m leaning towards the Talon 22 since I saw it at Cabela’s and it felt comfortable, but I’m unsure if it can fit a laptop and other larger items since it seemed small inside with just one main compartment.

@Jay
Yeah, it’s not really meant for a laptop—22 liters is pretty small!

Those are all good brands and will meet your needs. Pick the one that fits you best.

I don’t have a place nearby to try them on, so I’m wondering which is better.

I agree that those would be my top three picks. They are all excellent. If you can, order 2-4 packs from REI to try at home and return the ones you don’t want. I love my Osprey; it has great support and a ventilated back. I have to stuff something in that space in winter or my back gets cold! My husband has had the other two brands and says they are awesome as well. We hike almost every weekend.
