I’m planning a backpacking trip this fall and want to use my hammock for camping. Normally, I’m a hot sleeper, so I usually just rely on my sleeping bag, but it’s a pretty heavy one, and I’m not thrilled about carrying it around. I’ve heard about using an under quilt instead of a traditional sleeping bag. I’ve also got a thinner bag that might work, but I’m not sure if that’ll be enough. Has anyone tried these options? What worked for you in cooler weather?
I used to lug around a big sleeping bag too, and it was such a pain. Last fall, I switched to an under quilt, and it made a difference. It’s way lighter and does the job without making me sweat all night. If you’re a hot sleeper, I’d say go for the under quilt and leave the heavy bag at home.
I usually bring my lighter sleeping bag and pair it with a hammock under quilt. I sleep pretty warm too, so this combo keeps me comfortable without overheating. Plus, it’s easier to pack and carry. If you’re already used to a lighter bag, you might find this works well for fall.
Personally, I stick with a sleeping bag because I like the all-around warmth it gives. I’ve tried under quilts, but they never seem to keep me as warm as I’d like, especially when the wind picks up. Maybe I’m just not using them right, but I prefer the trusty bag, even if it’s heavier.
I’d say try the under quilt with your lighter bag first before committing to bringing the heavy one. That way, you’ll know if it works for you without adding unnecessary weight.
I’m more of a cold sleeper, so I always bring my warmer sleeping bag, even if it’s a bit heavier. But my buddy also swears by his under quilt and never complains about being cold.
I’ve done fall hammock camping a few times now, and I agree using an under quilt is the best way to stay warm without lugging around extra weight. It also packs down smaller, which is a huge plus. You might miss the cocoon-like feel of a sleeping bag, but the trade-off is worth it.
