Best way to spend $50 at Academy Sports for hiking?

I’m just getting into hiking with my son, and my wife recently got me some hiking boots. I have a $50 gift card to Academy Sports. What should I spend it on? I already have a Black Diamond headlamp and multiple knives. I’m in Central Florida but also plan to do some hiking in North Georgia. Any suggestions?

Here’s some advice (not specific to Academy, but helpful):

  1. Visit your library for books on hiking safety and gear basics, especially the 10 essentials. It’ll help you identify what you need.

  2. Check out Darwin on the Trail on YouTube. While he focuses on backpacking, his gear tips are great for beginners.

  3. Consider taking a Wilderness First Aid course. It’ll teach you how to handle emergencies (like snake or spider bites) and prevent accidents in the outdoors.

Thanks for the advice!

What season and type of hikes are you planning? Day hikes or overnight?

For day hikes, focus on the 10 essentials and how to carry them. Here are some ideas for $50:

  • First aid kit (look for a stop-the-bleed kit and take a class to learn how to use it).
  • Lightweight emergency rain gear, like Frogg Toggs (around $30-40).
  • Navigation tools (compass and a map of the areas you’ll hike).
  • Water treatment (tablets or a small filter if available).
  • Emergency shelter, like an SOL Emergency Bivvy ($20-30).
  • Insulation: A compact puffy jacket can make a big difference in cooler weather.

I’ll mostly be doing day hikes, any season. Thanks for the detailed list!

Start with the 10 essentials: navigation, headlamp, sun protection, first aid, knife, fire starter, shelter, extra food, extra water, and extra clothes. Adjust based on your location and season—for example, I skip sun protection in winter. These basics will cover most situations.

Invest in good wool socks. They’re a game-changer for hiking comfort.

Darn Tough socks are amazing! You could get about 1.7 pairs with $50, lol.
