Best Shoes for Sand Hikes?

Planning to hit some sand dunes in Utah this weekend. The whole trail is going to be nothing but sand, so I’m debating: should I go with sandals, or would shoes be a better bet?

Sandals for sure, man. I went to White Sands, and my shoes were full of sand in like two minutes. Plus, sandals will keep your feet cool in the heat.

Nah, shoes all the way. I tried sandals in a desert once, and my feet were torn up from the hot sand and rocks. Go for something with mesh that’ll breathe but still protect your feet.

I’d go with lightweight hiking shoes. Sandals might seem nice, but the sand will burn your feet after a while. With shoes, you at least avoid blisters from that constant rubbing.

Didn’t even think about sand being hot, but won’t my shoes get crazy hot too?

That’s true, your shoes might get crazy hot but you could wear light-colored shoes to reflect the heat a bit. I’d recommend trail runners, honestly. They’re comfy, and they dry quickly if you step in any water.

The trail runners is a good idea. Plus, if you wear sandals, there’s a good chance of getting sand stuck between the straps and your skin—blisters waiting to happen.

I always wear hiking sandals for dunes. Just make sure to get the ones with a good strap, so they don’t slip off. The freedom feels great compared to sweaty shoes.

Straps slipping is exactly what I’m worried about… Any specific brand you trust?

I’ve used Chacos in dunes, no issues. Plus, they don’t trap as much sand as shoes do. They are pretty solid for me.

Chacos are nice, but they’re heavy. I’d recommend Tevas if you go the sandal route—way lighter.

But honestly, consider bringing both. Sometimes you need to switch it up depending on how the trail feels
