Best Phone Distance Tracker?

Hey guys. I just took a test walk around my neighborhood park, doing a few laps, and here’s what I got for distances:

  • MapMyRun: 3.2 miles
  • Nike Run Club: 3.4 miles
  • Runkeeper: 3.6 miles
  • Garmin Connect (paired with my watch): 3.7 miles

Everything was started and stopped at the same time, with my phone in my hand or pocket. How is there such a big difference in distance readings? Anyone know of a super accurate app for iPhone that won’t give me weird numbers?

GPS on phones isn’t always that precise. Each app probably handles GPS data differently, like how often it pings for location updates. I usually trust Strava because it seems the most consistent, but you’ll always see slight variations.

Maybe use a dedicated GPS Watch like Garmin or Coros. I stopped relying on phone apps for this exact reason. My Garmin’s usually spot-on, plus it’s got other cool features if you’re doing longer hikes.

Dude I swear MapMyRun is ALWAYS off. I used it during a 5K, and OMG it had me finishing half a mile even before the finish line. I stick to Strava or AllTrails now. The accuracy isn’t perfect, but it’s more reliable.

Yeah, I’ve noticed MapMyRun seems the most off. I was really hoping it’d be better since it syncs with some other fitness apps I use.

It might also be because your phone’s in your pocket, honestly. I think pocket messes with the signal or movement. I used to get weird readings too until I started carrying it in my hand or using an armband.

Haha, I noticed Fitbit always gives me more steps/distance than my other trackers, even when I just wave my hand around. :joy: It’s like it wants me to feel good about myself or something.

I think you should check your app settings, some apps let you adjust how frequently they record GPS points—more points = more accurate, but it’ll drain your battery faster.

Ohhh, I didn’t know that. I think I’ll just have to dive into my settings and see what’s up

If you’re using your Fitbit, make sure you calibrate it to your stride length. Sometimes that throws off the distance if it’s not properly set.

Interesting, I’ll have to see if it’s set right—maybe that’s why Fitbit keeps overestimating.

I heard that every app pulls data from different GPS sources, so you’re never gonna get the same results across the board, I’m not sure if that’s the case.
