Best desert hiking boot for my wife

My wife’s awesome and wants to join me on some desert treks out west, but I’m struggling to find the right hiking boots for her. Seems like every pair has a “for women” price tag attached, and I don’t want to break the bank. Anyone have experience with affordable brands or surplus gear that works just as well? Looking for something durable and comfortable for sandy, dry terrain.

Merrell Moab boots are unisex and built tough for all terrains, plus they’re pretty affordable.

Honestly, I’d avoid women-specific boots altogether if you’re trying to save. My girlfriend uses military surplus boots that are built for tough conditions but don’t have that crazy markup.

That’s a great idea, hadn’t thought of surplus boots. Do they tend to run heavy though? I don’t want her feet getting tired on long treks.

Some surplus boots can be heavier, yeah, but there are lightweight options like Danner Tachyons.

I’d suggest looking at trail runners instead of full boots like the Altra Lone Peak. They’re always lightweight and super breathable, perfect for dry, sandy conditions.

If you’re worried about the price increase on women’s boots, you could look at kids’ sizes, too. KEEN makes sturdy boots for youth that go up to women’s sizes. Might be a cheaper route.
