I’m an American traveling to the Scottish Highlands this summer for the first time and need recommendations for a solid pair of hiking boots. I’ll be there for a week, and my friend (who hikes in Utah) suggested the Salomon X Ultra 4s, but the reviews seem mixed. My budget is around $150. Any advice?
Where exactly are you planning to hike, and what kind of terrain? Boots are a very personal choice, so if you can, try on a few pairs at a store. I live in Scotland and use Columbia Peak Freaks (£60 and the best boots I own), Scarpa Moraine, and Lowa Renegades (£180). Renegades are especially popular and worth considering.

Totally agree! I use Columbia Geoterra for winter—fully waterproof and super comfortable. I’ve also got two other Columbia pairs for different uses, and they’re all great. If you like Columbia, check out SportPursuit—they often have discounted gear, including last-season Columbia stuff.

Yes, SportPursuit is fantastic for deals! Definitely worth checking out.
I’m from Scotland and visit the Highlands regularly. In summer, the terrain isn’t too technical. I’ve used Adidas Terrex Skychaser 2, Salomon X Ultra Pioneer, and Salewa Mountain Trainers for hikes in areas like the Isle of Skye and Glencoe. The Salomon X Ultra 4 might even be overkill, but waterproofing (like Gore-Tex) is a must for wet grasslands and streams. Trail runners could also be an option if you prefer something lighter.
If you’re tackling routes like the old military road, it’s quite rocky. You’ll want boots with solid soles that can handle uneven terrain, especially for 20+ mile days (e.g., Tyndrum to Kingshouse). Ankle support is personal preference, but it might help in rocky sections like those around Loch Lomond.
You’ll love it! I was there last summer. Don’t miss the Isle of Skye, Glencoe, and Portree. Arrive early to avoid crowds and find parking. You won’t need cash—Apple Pay works everywhere. For hiking, I used Keen Targhee Lows, and for casual walking, Altra Lone Peaks. Bring a good shell for wind and rain—it’s a must.

These places are all on my list! I’m flying Newark to London, then to Edinburgh, hopping on a bus, and getting started. I’m so excited—it’s my first time out of the country.

You’ll have an amazing time! I’d go back in a heartbeat. Enjoy your trip!
I actually hiked the West Highland Way in Bedrock sandals last year, and they were fantastic. Great tread, and I didn’t get any hot spots. Might not be for everyone, but worth considering if you like sandals!
