Are zip-up boots suitable for hiking?

I’m considering zip-up boots for hiking. Do they stay securely zipped, or is it better to avoid them for such activities?

I’ve found them to be unreliable. Zippers can become major fail points on boots.

I’d recommend zippers on work boots but definitely not on hiking boots.

From my military days, some of my colleagues used boots with zippers. However, I found it difficult to get them tight enough to prevent heel slip.

I’m not aware of any reputable hiking boot brands that use zippers. There’s likely a good reason for that. Even boot enthusiasts generally advise against zippers.

Last summer, I considered boots with a Boa closure system but ultimately stuck with laces, which have always served me well.

Hello! It seems the main benefit of laced boots is their adjustability. You can fine-tune the fit for different conditions, which zip-up boots generally can’t match. I use Blundstone boots for shorter hikes due to a good fit, but they’re not ideal for longer treks.

I’ve worn zip-ups for work for years but never for hiking. While they’ve been reliable at work, hiking might require frequent adjustments that zippers can complicate. However, you could try them out and potentially start a new trend in hiking footwear.

In my 25+ years of firefighting, my zippers have never let me down. High-quality zippers tend to be reliable.

If you prioritize ease of use, consider side zip boots for easy adjustments and quick on/off capability.
