Hey everyone,
I’ve been hiking for a while now and currently use TrailMate for tips and AllTrails for GPS. Wondering if anyone has more app suggestions to help navigate or plan hikes. Thanks!

Gaia GPS is great.
Avenza is a newer one for me. It lets you download park maps, so you can see your GPS location as you hike, which is handy. Downside is that some good maps cost money.

I also use Avenza. Most National Forest and BLM maps are free and cover a lot of park trails.

I like Avenza, but it can be tough finding the right map. Sometimes my hike starts on one map and overlaps with another.
It depends on where you’re hiking. In Southern Europe, people use Wikiloc a lot for sharing and finding trails, while Komoot is more popular in Northern Europe, and AllTrails is big in the US.
For planning, Gaia’s route planner is solid with a free account. GPX Viewer and gpx.studio are also good tools for creating your own routes.
@Sam
Thanks for this!
This question comes up a lot, and it really comes down to what you’re looking for. Different apps are good for technical navigation, route planning, or finding trails.
Any specific features you’re after?
@West
Looking for something reliable offline, as AllTrails sometimes has navigation issues.

Try Outdoor Active – it’s pretty stable for offline use.

Give Gaia a shot. I downloaded all of Colorado for offline use and have been impressed. It’s saved me more than once!
My dad swears by Komoot after a hiking trip to Great Britain. He says it’s the best for trails.

Komoot’s route planning is super helpful, especially when I need to change the route midway.

I also like Komoot. It’s great for finding and planning routes, plus it has a companion app for smartwatches that gives turn-by-turn navigation so you don’t have to keep pulling out your phone.

My only complaint with Komoot is that I can’t preview the maps without subscribing to Premium, which I’m hesitant to do.
Wikiloc and Komoot are both good, depending on the region, alongside AllTrails.

I’m a fan of Caltopo. Great features for free, and they offer extra map layers if you subscribe.
I use OsmAnd with the Top Wikimapia Overlay.
If you’re using Apple Watch, Workoutdoors is a solid option.
maps.me is another option.
